The Pre-College Initiative (PCI) Program is designed to stimulate interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields for students in K-12 by encouraging students to attend college and pursue technical degrees, providing exposure to real world applications of STEM principles, and mentorship with college students and professionals in the STEM fields. In the past NSBE has conducted SAT preparation as well science and math tutoring. NSBE DC supports the following NSBE Jr. chapters through mentorship, technical guidance, and outreach:

• Friendship Heights
• Leap Forward (CASH)
Future Innovators Scholarship
In celebration of our 25th chapter anniversary, NSBE DC will provide at least twenty-five $1,000 merit-based scholarships to outstanding high school seniors in the Washington, DC metropolitan area who plan to major in STEM fields at a four-year college or university. The Future Innovators Scholarship Fund is financed with chapter fundraisers and contributions from various individuals and corporate sponsors. The chapter has awarded more than $30,000 in scholarships over the last four years and awarded more than 100 Future Innovator Scholarships over since the chapter’s inception. Girls Love Stem Conference
Last year, NSBE DC hosted its first Girls Love Stem Conference on May 4, 2014. The one-day conference incorporated hands-on interactive and collaborative activities aimed to get minority and underrepresented female students interested and motivated to pursue STEM careers. Over 70 Washington DC Metro Area female students in grades 6 through 12 to attended the event.

• How Computers Work Presented by IT Computer Wiz Kids
• Digital Photography Presented by Best Buy Geek Squad
• The Creative Side of Tech Presented by DC Web Women
• Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream Demo by Lulu’s Ice Cream
• Adventures in Flight Presented by NSBE DC
The conference wrapped up with a closeout session that included student awards and an opportunity for the young ladies to share their favorite experiences from the conference workshops with an audience of volunteers, parents and peers. Lulu’s Ice Cream was also on hand to close out the conference by providing their signature liquid nitrogen ice for all of the girls, leaving them amazed and delighted.
USA Science and Engineering Festival
NSBE DC partnered with NSBE Baltimore Chapter, NSBE Greenbelt Space Chapterand the Nothern Virginia NSBE Jr. Chapter to particpate in the USA Science and Engineering Festival on April 26-27, 2014. During the two day event, NSBE DC led numerous STEM activities including a forum on STEM careers, robotics demonstration, demonstration of Solar Energy and an interactive LEGO toothpick challenge designed to educate kids about costruction engineering.
